Barpak Village: A Blend of Natural Beauty, Culture, and Resilience

Gorkha. Located in the northern part of Gorkha district, Barpak village is a place full of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and historical significance. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters above sea level, this village is particularly known for the unique culture, hospitality, and Himalayan views of the Ghale and Gurung communities. Barpak is remembered by many as the epicenter of the devastating earthquake of 2072 BS. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on the 12th of Baisakh had its epicenter around this area, causing great damage to the village. Hundreds of houses were completely destroyed, many lost their lives, and many families were displaced. But even after the disaster, the people of Barpak have bravely and unitedly rebuilt the village. Now, safe houses in a modern style have been constructed in the village, and infrastructure development has also gained momentum.

Another specialty of Barpak is the Ghale and Gurung culture here. The local attire, unique cuisine, and cultural lifestyle are attractive. Various festivals and cultural programs make the village even more vibrant. In particular, Ghatu, Sorathi, and Maruni dances are the cultural identity of this place. The behavior of the local people, who welcome guests with warmth, makes tourists feel at home.

From a natural perspective, Barpak is also extremely beautiful. From the village, one can observe the magnificent views of mountain ranges including Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Buddha Himal. As it is possible to reach the Manaslu region via Laprak and Gupisipakha from Barpak, this route is becoming popular among trekking enthusiasts. With the expansion of homestay services in the village, locals have started earning from tourism. The promotion of local products, handicrafts, and organic food has also had a positive impact on the village's economic activities.

However, Barpak is still facing some challenges. Although road access is easy, travel becomes difficult during the monsoon season. Further improvement is needed in basic services such as health, education, and communication. Despite the high potential for tourism, the expected benefits have not been realized due to a lack of adequate publicity and long-term planning.

Barpak, a confluence of natural beauty, historical memory, a courageous community, and living culture, has become a symbol of reconstruction and potential today.
