Election Commission Proposes Simultaneous Local and Provincial Elections in 2084 BS

Kathmandu. The Election Commission has proposed to the political parties to complete the local level and provincial assembly elections to be held in 2084 BS on the same date.

The commission states that conducting elections for both these levels simultaneously will save more than approximately 4 billion rupees of state expenditure, as the terms of local level bodies are set to expire on Baishakh 30, 2084 BS, and provincial assemblies on Mangshir 4 of the same year. The commission held a special discussion with political parties on Tuesday with the objective of making the elections economical, technology-friendly, and organized.

In a conversation with News Agency Nepal, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ramprasad Bhandari provided information on various aspects of election reform. During the discussion, consultations were also held on conducting elections for the 74 vacant local level and provincial assembly positions that became vacant after representatives resigned to contest in the House of Representatives elections in the last election.

He also stated that the commission had previously recommended to the government to conduct an election for the vacant post of one member representing the Sudurpashchim Province in the National Assembly due to the death of a member. The commission has informed that the draft of the 'Election Management Act' is being prepared to be sent to the parliament through the Ministry of Home Affairs to make the elections modern and technology-friendly.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari urged the parties to pass the Election Management Bill in the upcoming budget session and bring it into law. He said, 'A law should come that arranges for conducting elections by setting the local level and provincial assembly elections on the same date. If there isn't a technology-friendly law for conducting technology-friendly elections right now, it won't be possible.'

He emphasized that parties should play a positive role in the parliament as the old style of elections cannot be changed without a law. The commission argues that a new law is essential to bring in modern technology and to make elections clean, fair, and fearless. The commission has committed to finalizing the draft based on the suggestions received from the parties and sending it to the legislature through the Ministry of Home Affairs soon. The parties have also given their opinions and suggestions to make the upcoming elections modern, technology-friendly, and clean.
