Birgunj Customs Office Resumes Operations After MRP Implementation

Parsa. The customs clearance process of Birgunj Customs Office, through which the country's most goods and items enter, has resumed again.

The customs clearance process, which was halted for about a week due to the mandatory implementation of Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on goods arriving at the customs point, has resumed after importers agreed to declare the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of goods and items themselves and fix the MRP after delivering them to the warehouse.

Udaya Singh Bista, Information Officer at Birgunj Customs Office, said that the customs clearance process has moved forward again from Wednesday only after importers agreed to declare the MRP at customs and send it to the market only after affixing the MRP after delivering the goods to the warehouse.

“We were ready to facilitate the customs clearance process. However, customs clearance was stopped because importers did not participate in the procedural tasks from filling the customs clearance form to making declarations,” he said, “Now, importers have agreed to get customs clearance by making a commitment for some time.”

From April 15 to April 22, importers and exporters did not participate in the customs clearance process. Due to this, the number of goods vehicles being stopped towards Raxaul, India, had increased. Information Officer Bista said that customs revenue of approximately Rs 75 crore was collected on Wednesday alone.

“Now the customs clearance process is moving forward,” he said. Birgunj Customs Office collects customs revenue of approximately Rs 50 crore to Rs 60 crore daily.

Hari Prasad Gautam, Chairman of Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the MRP issue is only a temporary solution in the current situation.
