Constitutional Council Convenes for Chief Justice Recommendation

Kathmandu. A meeting of the Constitutional Council has been called for the recommendation of the Chief Justice. The meeting has been scheduled for Thursday at the direction of Prime Minister and Council Chairman Balen Shah.  

According to the Prime Minister's Press Advisor Deepa Dahal, the meeting has been called prioritizing the constitutional responsibility of selecting the leadership of the judiciary. Dahal informed that the main agenda of the meeting is the recommendation for the appointment of the Chief Justice.  

'Following the Prime Minister's directive to expedite the Chief Justice appointment process in a swift and transparent manner, the Council's secretariat has completed preparations for the meeting,' said Dahal.  

The Constitutional Council's secretariat issued a letter on Wednesday itself, scheduling the meeting for tomorrow, Thursday, at 5:00 PM at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar. It has been stated that discussions will be held on suitable names for the post of Chief Justice and a suitable candidate will be recommended.

Council members have been notified to attend the meeting. These include Speaker Dolprasad Aryal, National Assembly Chairman Narayanprasad Dahal, and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobita Gautam.  

Similarly, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives Bhishma Raj Angdembe and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Ruby Kumari have also been invited to the meeting. Considering the potential impact on judicial proceedings due to the long-standing absence of a permanent Chief Justice, the government has expedited this process.
