Minister Timilsina: Good Governance, Transparency, Public Trust Depend on Free Press

Kathmandu, April 20: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Vikram Timilsina has stated that good governance, transparency, and public trust cannot be strengthened without a free press.

In a message issued today on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, he described a free, impartial, and responsible press as a pillar of democracy, stating that its role is decisive in ensuring public accountability.

Communications Minister Dr. Timilsina said that media are not just channels for information flow but also key institutions that hold politics, administration, the private sector, and the entire society accountable, thus requiring this sector to uphold high-level responsibility along with press freedom. He clarified that the government is fully committed to the press and freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution of Nepal, expressing the view that only a free press can make good governance and transparency sustainable.

He also stated that along with press freedom, commitment to facts, professional ethics, and accountability to public interest must be given equal importance.
"The credibility of the press strengthens the credibility of democracy. In this digital age, we need to be aware of challenges such as the spread of misinformation, misleading content, and the misuse of social media. In such a situation, journalism based on truth, facts, and public interest is even more necessary," the message reads.
Minister Dr. Timilsina mentioned that the role of the communication sector will always be important in advancing society in a conscious, responsible, and democratic direction, and expressed respect for all journalists and media persons active in favor of truth and public interest.

Minister Timilsina also expressed confidence that this day, being celebrated with the slogan 'Building a Peaceful Future: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,' will further strengthen the practice of free, responsible, and credible journalism.
