West Lake: A Serene Oasis in Hangzhou

Hangzhou. To visit China's Hangzhou city and not spend time in the vicinity of 'West Lake' is like returning with an unfulfilled dream. 

Amidst the hustle and grandeur of 21st-century modern China lies a tranquil oasis that connects the human mind to centuries-old imperial history and nature.

When I set foot on the shore of West Lake, I felt as if I were standing on a painter's canvas. On one side, the modern Hangzhou city adorned with skyscrapers; on the other, serene mountains covered in greenery and mist. This lake is not just a reservoir of water; it is a living museum of Chinese civilization, philosophy, and art.

At one time, this lake was just a small marsh connected to the Qiantang River. But from the eighth century onwards, governors and literary figures here began to adorn it. 

Especially, the famous poet Bai Juyi constructed the dam and Bai Causeway here, enabling people to enjoy the lake by walking instead of by boat. 

Two centuries later, another great poet, Su Dongpo, further organized the lake and laid the foundation for the Su Causeway. Today's tourists feel the same footsteps of history while walking on those old bridges.

It is almost impossible to capture the beauty of West Lake in words. The weeping willows and trees, the colorful boats floating on the water's surface, and the pagodas standing on the mountain peaks create a magical atmosphere. 

This lake, which was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2011, has historical Buddhist temples like Jingci and Lingyin around it, which further enhance its spiritual grandeur.

There is also the tomb of Su Xiaoxiao, a beauty from the fifth century who died of grief while waiting for her lover. According to folklore, even today, in the silence of the night, the melodious sound of the bells hanging on her clothes is heard! 

Similarly, the famous legend of the 'White Snake' is also associated with the Leifeng Pagoda of this lake. These stories make West Lake mysterious and romantic.

Poet Su Shi rightly wrote, 'This lake is like the face of a beautiful woman, whether she is lightly adorned or heavily, she is always beautiful.' 

The view when the sun shines and the water surface glitters, and when it rains and the mist-covered mountains appear, is truly wonderful.
