Federation of Nepali Journalists Enters 71st Year, Pledges to Uphold Press Freedom

Kathmandu. The central organization of Nepali journalists, the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), has entered its 71st year of establishment today. The FNJ organized a rally to mark its anniversary.

FNJ President Nirmala Sharma extended best wishes to journalists and press freedom advocates across the country, stating that the Federation has been working relentlessly for seven decades for the freedom of expression of citizens and the rights and welfare of working journalists. In her congratulatory message, President Sharma paid homage to the pioneers who led the organization since its inception and offered condolences to the martyr journalists who sacrificed their lives in the fight for press freedom. She mentioned that the FNJ prioritizes the defense of human rights, the protection of the right to information, and the strengthening of democracy through responsible journalism.

The proliferation of misinformation, amplified by recent developments in information technology, is considered a major challenge for journalism. Expressing hope that the two-thirds majority government formed after the House of Representatives election will end political instability, the FNJ demanded that stalled communication-related laws be brought into discussion with stakeholders.

The government was specifically urged to provide appropriate compensation to media houses and injured journalists affected during the recent 'Janjy' movement. The FNJ also warned that it would strongly resist any attempt by any state body to curtail press freedom.

The FNJ is currently advancing initiatives to enroll all media outlets and working journalists in the Social Security Fund. Committing to further strengthening coordination with international organizations for the physical and professional security of journalists, President Sharma appealed to all journalists to ensure the public's right to accurate information and to fulfill the role expected by society.
