Elected Lawmaker Mahabir Pun Offers Two-Point Suggestion to Incoming Government on Education Reform

Baglung. Lawmaker Mahabir Pun, elected from Myagdi, has offered a two-point suggestion to the new government that is about to be formed.

Pun shared two suggestions regarding education for the incoming government via the social networking site Facebook.

Pun suggested that a purely academic environment must be created by ending political division and politicization in universities, schools, and health institutions. To achieve this, he proposed a complete amendment to the University Act and the Education Act.

Pun further stated that the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) should be completely restructured to place greater emphasis solely on skill-based education rather than theoretical education.

Pun, who served as the Minister for Education, Science and Technology in the government formed after the Jana Andolan (People's Movement), made improving public education a major agenda item during his election campaign. He has consistently stated his desire to end corruption, irregularities, arbitrary practices, and politicization in education, noting that he failed to bring education-related acts and regulations while serving as a minister and needed to reach parliament to fulfill that goal, which is why he contested the election.

Pun had attempted to introduce the Education Regulation, the University Act, the Higher Education Act, and the Act related to the Research and Innovation Fund as early as last Poush month. He had previously complained that he was unable to bring the acts because of non-cooperation from the very government he was part of.
