Farmers in Bhojpur's Majaule Shift Focus to Profitable Commercial Garlic Cultivation

Bhojpur. Farmers in Majaule of Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality-5 are increasingly attracted to commercial garlic farming. Garlic cultivation, which was previously limited to household use, is now developing as a source of income.

With the expansion of rural road networks, farmers have started prioritizing commercial farming as their produced garlic can now easily reach the market. Vijayaluitel, a farmer from Majaule, is currently cultivating garlic on about two ropanis of land. She stated that the worry about the market has disappeared as traders now come to the village to collect garlic due to easy road access.

“Previously, it was difficult to take the produce to the market for sale, but now that the road has reached here, traders come to our homes, and we get a good price,” Luitel said. According to her, last year, garlic was sold from home for up to NPR 200 per kilo. Good income was earned because the production cost was comparatively low and the market price was attractive.

“Many farmers in the village have engaged in commercial garlic farming,” she said, “I am also gradually increasing the area.”

According to local farmers, the soil and climate of Majaule are suitable for garlic cultivation. Garlic farming is establishing itself as a safe crop because it yields well and can be stored for a long time. Farmers say that demand has recently started coming from neighboring markets and outside the district.

Since significant income can be earned, garlic farming is becoming profitable even for small farmers. The increasing attraction towards cash crops compared to traditional food grains is seen to have a positive impact on the village's economic activities. The local level has stated that it is prioritizing agricultural modernization, irrigation management, and technical support. It is reported that infrastructure expansion and market access assurance have made the rural economy dynamic.

With infrastructure development and the expansion of commercial thinking in agriculture, farmers in Majaule are moving towards self-reliance. They believe that the income generated from garlic farming will not only improve the daily lives of households but also help prevent migration from rural areas.
