Newly Elected Bangladeshi Lawmakers Take Oath of Office

Dhaka. Lawmakers elected in Bangladesh's 13th parliamentary election took the oath of office and secrecy on Tuesday morning at the South Plaza of the National Parliament House. Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the lawmakers.

Elected lawmakers began entering the parliament premises from 9 AM. BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman also participated in the program along with his wife and daughter. It is reported that the lawmakers will also assume responsibilities as members of the Constitution Reform Council along with taking the oath of office.

The Election Commission published the official results for 297 out of 299 seats in the gazette on Friday night. It is reported that representatives from more than a dozen countries also participated in the oath-taking ceremony. The program to swear in the new government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin is scheduled for 4 PM on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the Parliament itself.

According to the election results, the BNP secured a clear majority by winning 209 seats. Similarly, Jamaat-e-Islami is set to become the main opposition party for the first time, winning 68 seats.
