National Assembly Unanimously Approves Withdrawal of Social Media Bill

Kathmandu, February 8: The National Assembly has unanimously passed the decision by the government to withdraw the Social Media Bill.

The Social Media Bill, 2081, which was under consideration in the National Assembly, has been withdrawn in today's session. The Chairman of the Assembly, Narayan Dahal, announced the withdrawal of the bill after presenting it for a decision.

Tulsa Kumari Dahal, Chairperson of the Legislation Management Committee, presented the 'Report of the Legislation Management Committee Regarding the Social Media Bill, 2081'.

The session held on Bhadra 13, 2082, had originated the bill from the National Assembly and sent it to the Legislation Management Committee for clause-by-clause discussion. Fifteen amendments were registered by 35 members of the committee.

Committee Chairperson Dahal informed that informal discussions were held in various stages on the bill with the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, the Secretary of the Ministry, and stakeholders.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had decided to request the withdrawal of the bill on Magh 20 and issued a directive on behalf of the government to withdraw the bill through a letter dated Magh 21.
