Nepali Congress Leader States Federal Government Failing to Uphold Spirit of Federalism

Kathmandu. Nepali Congress leader and National Assembly member Krishna Prasad Sitaula stated that the federal government has failed to function according to the spirit of federalism.

Speaking at the Legislation Management Committee under the National Assembly meeting held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, Sitaula asserted that regardless of which party leads the government, the federal government has not been working in line with the spirit of federalism. He remarked that currently, provincial and local level governments appear to be subordinate to the center.

He further argued that provinces, which embody the spirit of federalism, are unable to exercise their rights, and he expressed the view that there are issues even in the list of power distribution in the schedules of the constitution. Sitaula noted that in some places, local governments appear to be performing better than provincial governments. He emphasized the need for both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly to jointly develop a common perspective regarding the implementation of federalism.

The meeting reviewed the visit concerning inter-level legislative relations and discussed the draft report.
