Egg Prices Rise in Chitwan Amid Approaching Federal Elections

As the general election for the House of Representatives approaches, the demand for eggs has surged. Correspondingly, the price of eggs has gradually increased. The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers' Association has increased the price of eggs effective today.

Accordingly, the farm gate price for a large egg crate (30 pieces) has reached NPR 495. The price of large eggs, previously sold at NPR 465 per crate, has increased by NPR 30. Similarly, the farm gate price for medium eggs has been set at NPR 475. These eggs were previously sold for NPR 445.

In the month of Mangsir, egg prices reached an all-time high. At that time, large eggs were sold at the farm gate for NPR 565 per crate, and medium eggs were priced at NPR 550. According to the association's chairman, Binod Pokharel, the price increase is due to the election atmosphere in Nepal and stricter controls along the border areas coinciding with the elections.

A decrease in the number of egg-laying hens, resulting in lower egg production, along with the reopening of closed schools, is causing a gradual improvement in egg prices. The production cost per unit for eggs comes to NPR 19.12. Calculating this, the cost price for farmers stands at NPR 574.06 per crate.

Farmers were disheartened when egg prices fell again after nearing the cost price. Now, farmers are hopeful that the prices will rise. The association determines the support price for eggs based on market conditions.
