Lewandowski Reveals Why He Never Joined Manchester United
The Missed Transfer Opportunity
Robert Lewandowski has opened up about why he never joined Manchester United, despite initially agreeing to the move. The Polish striker was close to a Premier League transfer in 2012 while playing for Borussia Dortmund, where he was enjoying his first 30-goal season. Sir Alex Ferguson had identified him as a target, and while both sides verbally agreed, no formal deal was finalized.
Lewandowski's Side of the Story
In an interview with BBC Sport, Lewandowski revealed, "I decided to join Manchester United and said 'yes.' I wanted to go there and meet Alex Ferguson. But Dortmund couldn’t sell me because they knew if I stayed, they could earn more money, and I could wait another year or two. Still, it’s true, I told Manchester United 'yes.'"
Continued Success Elsewhere
Instead of moving to England, Lewandowski spent two more seasons at Dortmund before joining Bayern Munich, where he scored 344 goals in eight years, winning multiple Bundesliga and Champions League titles. Now 36, he plays for Barcelona and remains a top performer.
No Regrets About Missing Premier League
Reflecting on his career, Lewandowski said, "Maybe it’s a small regret, but looking back at my time with Dortmund, Bayern, and now Barça, I’m very happy. I don’t feel like I’ve missed out because every transfer and decision was my choice."
Current Focus on Recovery
Lewandowski is currently recovering from an injury at Barcelona, aiming to return to form in La Liga. His career choices, though different from what could have been, have left him with no major regrets.
