Historical 'Thulodhunga' Awaits Conservation in Lamjung

An Ancient Stone with Rich Historical Significance

Located just 500 meters from the Ishwarneshwar Mahadev Temple in Madhyanepal Municipality-7, Karaputar, Lamjung, the Thulodhunga (giant stone) is a historical artifact steeped in legend and religious importance. According to local folklore, the stone was buried by a seven-day-old infant, adding to its mystical aura. Dating back to 1829 BS (1694 Shakabda), the stone bears an inscription documenting a generous donation by Queen Shaladhara, Sakalan, and Kumari—wives of King Viranarayan—who dedicated 140 muri (a traditional unit) of farmland to Ishwarneshwar Mahadev Temple for the sustenance of ascetics and devotees during Shivaratri 110.

The Inscription and Its Historical Value

The stone’s inscription, written in archaic script, reads:

*"Shri Shake 1694, during the reign of Viranarayan, his devout wives Shaladhara, Sakalan, and Kumari pledged 140 muri of grain for dharma-karma (religious deeds)..."*
This engraving not only confirms the stone’s antiquity but also serves as a rare record of medieval land grants and religious patronage. Ramchandra Ghimire, former temple chairman, notes that the inscription becomes legible only after cleaning the stone’s surface, highlighting the need for preservation 10.

Cultural Traditions Fading Away

The site once hosted vibrant festivals:

  • Fagupurnima: A popular chelo-hanne (stone-throwing) competition drew crowds from Kaski, Tanahun, and Lamjung.

  • Haribodhani Ekadashi: Devotees used to float flowers in the nearby Madi River.
However, these traditions have dwindled due to neglect, leaving the stone and its associated cultural practices at risk of being forgotten.

Current Conservation Efforts

Despite its significance, Thulodhunga lacks institutional protection. Local stakeholders are now stepping up:

  • Ishwarneshwar Mahadev Area Development Committee plans to integrate the stone into a tourist circuit, promoting its historical and religious value.

  • Municipal Commitment: Ward Chairperson Hira Bahadur Gurung and Mayor Ramesh Kumar Pandey have pledged budget allocation for conservation, recognizing its urgency.

The Way Forward

To revive Thulodhunga’s legacy, experts recommend:

  1. Documentation: Detailed archaeological study of the inscription.

  2. Infrastructure: Protective enclosures and informational signboards.

  3. Cultural Revival: Restoring festivals to attract tourists and pilgrims.

This ancient stone is not just a relic but a bridge to Nepal’s medieval past—its preservation is vital for cultural continuity and local identity
