NEA reports NPR 11.36 billion profit in first half of current fiscal year

Kathmandu, February 28 — The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has announced a profit of NPR 11.36 billion in the first six months of the fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25).
According to NEA, its total revenue during this period was NPR 70.44 billion, generated through electricity sales, interest, and other sources.
The NEA’s expenditure, which includes costs for electricity purchases, administrative expenses, and various projects, amounted to NPR 59.08 billion during the same period.
Based on this, the NEA's projected profit for the first half of the fiscal year is NPR 11.36 billion, after deductions.
The NEA has consistently reported profits since the first term of Executive Director Kulman Ghising's leadership, starting from fiscal year 2072/73 (2015/16), which initially faced a loss of NPR 8.89 billion.
In the previous fiscal year (2023/24), the NEA made a profit of NPR 14.46 billion.
The NEA used its profits to invest in electricity production, transmission, distribution infrastructure, and electrification projects.
In the first six months of the current fiscal year, the NEA collected NPR 53.18 billion from electricity sales.
The NEA also purchased 6.31 billion units of electricity from its subsidiaries, affiliated companies, and private producers, with a total payment of NPR 34.84 billion.
Additionally, the authority imported 24.2 million units of electricity from India, for which NPR 1.65 billion was paid.
From mid-July to mid-December, the NEA exported 1.77 billion units of electricity to India, earning NPR 13.09 billion in the process.
During this period, the NEA spent NPR 13.35 billion on various electrification projects under government and foreign aid-supported development budgets, including NPR 10.49 billion directly for foreign aid projects.
