Directly elected presidential system would be detrimental: Madhav Nepal

Kathmandu, January 28 — Madhav Nepal, the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist), has stated that a directly elected presidential system would be detrimental to Nepal.

Addressing a thought forum organized by the Socialist Front in Kathmandu on Tuesday, he emphasized the need for extensive debate before adopting a directly elected system.

"What would happen if a directly elected presidential system were implemented? In the United States, there is currently chaos. Whether spoken or unspoken, such a system would lead to confusion. In a country like Nepal, there must be thorough discussion before moving towards a directly elected system," he said.

During the program, Nepal stressed that the communist parties must have uniformity in their ideology before merging into a single party. He argued that unity would be fragile without shared ideas and mutual consensus.

He also suggested that if forming a single party is not possible, the Socialist Front should be strengthened. He claimed that if the three parties within the Front (Maoist Center, Unified Socialist, and Communist Party of Nepal) move forward together, they could create a significant impact both domestically and internationally.
