Teachers prepare for another Kathmandu-centered protest

Kathmandu, January 21 — Teachers are preparing for a new round of protests centered in Kathmandu to pressure the government to pass the School Education Bill.

Despite significant time passing, the bill has not been finalized, and teachers are intensifying their efforts to push for its approval. The bill is currently under discussion in the Education Committee of the House of Representatives.

The Nepal Teachers' Federation has announced plans for a decisive protest to urge the swift resolution of the bill. To prepare for the movement, the Federation has called a national committee meeting in Kathmandu on January 29 and 30.

Federation President Lakxmi Kishor Subedi emphasized the need for a decisive movement to push for the enactment of the School Education Act, which will benefit teachers, staff, students, and schools.

The Federation is also calling for the necessary strategies and programs to be decided in its third national committee meeting. While preparing for the protests, the government recently amended the Social Security Act, 2018 through an ordinance, making teachers contribute to the pension fund as well.

Teachers, however, argue that the bill should be passed before any such amendments are made, accusing the government of revising the bill with the intention of delaying the law.
