Arrest warrant issued against Shakib Al Hasan
Dhaka, January 20 — A Dhaka court has reportedly issued an arrest warrant against Shakib Al Hasan, the former Bangladesh cricket captain and current Awami League MP.
The reported case relates to two bounced cheques and comes amid reports of Shakib’s absence from Bangladesh due to alleged threats to his life.
The legal development, as reported by The Times of India (TOI), marks a fresh controversy in Shakib's already complex public life.
Why was the arrest warrant issued against Shakib Al Hasan?
The arrest warrant was issued on Sunday by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman.
This legal move followed Shakib's alleged failure to comply with court orders to appear in connection with a case filed by the International Finance Investment and Commerce (IFIC) Bank.
The cheques in question, which allegedly bounced, were linked to Shakib's agricultural venture, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm.
The TOI report also says that the court has also issued a similar warrant against Gazi Shahagir Hossain, the managing director of the farm, for failing to respond to the summons.
What led to the case against Shakib Al Hasan?
The legal troubles stem from cheques issued by Shakib’s company that were reportedly dishonoured in October last year.
The IFIC Bank took legal action in December 2024, filing a case against Shakib and three other officials associated with the company.
While two of the company officials surrendered in court and were granted bail, Shakib’s continued absence has raised questions.
Shakib's agricultural business, established in 2016 in Satkhira, has been reportedly inactive since 2021.
Where is Shakib Al Hasan now?
Currently residing in the United States, Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh. His absence has been linked to concerns over his safety following civil unrest and political turbulence in the country.
Shakib, who was elected as an MP in January 2024 on an Awami League ticket, has reportedly been avoiding public appearances in Bangladesh.
