Kathmandu, December 8 — The Heritage Preservation Society staged a protest in Kathmandu demanding the demolition of the 15-story Chhayadevi Complex in Thamel.
The complex, built over an ancient public pond, Kamalpokhari, is considered to have encroached on historical heritage, and the society is calling for its removal to restore the pond.
The protesters rallied on Sunday in the Sundhara area of Kathmandu, advocating for the protection of historical sites.
They called for action against those responsible for constructing the commercial building over the Lichhavi-era heritage site, demanding that the government take ownership of the historical property and restore it.
The protesters carried placards reading "Boycott Chhaydevi Complex," "Reconstruct Kamalpokhari," and "All Nepalis Unite for Heritage Protection."
The activists also raised concerns about the construction of the Chhayadevi Complex over the historical Kamalpokhari of Bikramsheel Mahavihar, arguing that the destruction of the pond should be reversed.
The case regarding this issue is currently under consideration in the Supreme Court, and the Heritage Preservation Society expressed hope that the court would deliver justice to prevent further destruction of the country’s invaluable heritage.
