Home Ministry warns of potential flooding from Kulekhani dam

Kathmandu, September 27 — The Ministry of Home Affairs has urged residents to remain alert as the Kulekhani Dam in Makawanpur is expected to fill within a few hours.

Given the dam's safety considerations, there is a possibility that the dam's gates may need to be opened, which could lead to sudden flooding in the settlements along the Bagmati River, particularly in the Sisneri area below the dam, according to Dr. Bhishma Kumar Bhusal, head of the Ministry's Disaster and Conflict Management Section.

He has called for heightened vigilance among residents living in the lower coastal areas below Kulekhani. Additionally, he urged security personnel and volunteers deployed in response efforts to remain on high alert.

Local disaster management committees in the relevant local levels have also been requested to prepare safe locations. The water level in the dam and rivers has risen sharply due to continuous rainfall since Thursday night.
