Rain expected to continue until Dashain, say meteorologists

Kathmandu, September 22 — The weather forecasting division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has announced that rain is expected to begin Tuesday. Senior meteorologist Pratibha Manandhar informed that there is a possibility of rain continuing until Dashain this year.

The influence of monsoon winds remains strong across the country, with light to moderate rainfall expected in most regions over the next few days. The department noted that the monsoon trough is situated south of the average position, keeping the possibility of rain active.

Manandhar stated that while the monsoon typically ends in the first week of Ashwin, this year it has been prolonged. She also mentioned that India has reported a similar extension of the monsoon season, as it has yet to announce its conclusion.

She said, “Last year, the monsoon ended on September 23, but this year it is expected to remain active until the first week of October. A system of rain is expected to be active from the start of Dashain.”

Currently, the hilly regions of the country are partly to generally cloudy, while other areas are partially cloudy. The department reported light rain with thunder in some parts of the Karnali Province.

On Monday afternoon, the weather is expected to be partly to generally cloudy in the hilly areas, with a slight chance of light to moderate rain in a few places. During the night, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder in some areas of Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati Provinces, with heavy rain possible in some parts of Koshi and Madhesh.

On Tuesday, the weather is expected to be partly to generally cloudy across the country, with light to moderate rain likely in most areas, along with thunder.

This year, the monsoon is expected to remain active until Dashain. Dr. Binod Pokharel, an associate professor at Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Meteorology, also indicated that the likelihood of the monsoon ending before Dashain is low.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged caution due to potential weather fluctuations and the possibility of rain in the coming days.
