Government to challenge Supreme Court's 20-meter buffer zone ruling

Kathmandu, September 16 — The government is set to file a review petition today against the Supreme Court's decision requiring a 20-meter buffer zone along riverbanks.

The Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers will submit the review petition on behalf of the government, according to the Attorney General's Office.

After the court's ruling halted construction and other activities on riverbank lands, widespread opposition has emerged.

The public, as well as the government, have argued that protecting riverbank lands and buildings would involve significant compensation costs, making implementation impractical.

The decision was made by a bench including Judge Anand Mohan Bhattarai.
