Central Committee to approve two-term limit for Prime Ministers, says Sharma

Kathmandu, August 31 — Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has announced that a proposal to limit the Prime Ministership to two terms will be discussed at the central committee meeting on Sunday. He made this statement during a program in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Sharma explained that he proposed a policy allowing a person to serve as President only once and as Prime Minister twice. He believes this policy will gain consensus at the central committee meeting. Sharma emphasized that even if a Prime Minister is highly popular, there should be a limit of two terms to ensure fresh leadership.

He acknowledged that while there are current challenges, they will be addressed through discussion. Sharma noted that adopting this policy could influence all political parties in the future.

If the policy is not adopted now, Sharma said it would be revisited during a future constitutional amendment.

Sharma criticized the current system, questioning the benefit to citizens of having the same individuals repeatedly serve as Prime Minister. He argued for a policy where no one should serve as Prime Minister more than twice, regardless of their popularity. He believes this approach will help ensure a rotation of leadership and address the issue of repeated terms in office.
