Kathmandu, August 20 - An annual festival known as Gaijatra is being celebrated with a unique cow procession in Kathmandu Valley today. The Newar community leads this event, guiding cows around the city to help departed souls navigate the Baitarni River. (In Hindu mythology the river Baitarni is said to be connecting our world with the afterlife)
This festival holds particular significance due to the prominence of the Newar community in the area. Today, Gaijatra is also observed in Basantapur and Hanumandhoka with similar festivities.
A notable tradition involves children dressing up as cows and parading around the city. Additionally, some participants dress in unusual costumes or as jogis, enhancing the festival's vibrant and eclectic atmosphere.
