Nepali Congress withdraws support, vows to act as effective opposition in parliament

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) has officially withdrawn its support from the government led by CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and declared its intent to play a robust opposition role in the parliament.

The decision was made during a meeting of the NC central work execution committee convened at the residence of party President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilakantha. General-secretary Biswo Prakash Sharma confirmed the decision.

The NC, while reaffirming its commitment to the promises made during the general elections held on November 20, 2022, and respecting the voters' mandate, expressed dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Dahal's decision to collaborate with other political parties in a manner that ignored the electoral mandate. Consequently, the party decided to withdraw its support.

General-secretary Sharma stated that the coalition breakup occurred in a pre-mediated manner, at a time when there was a critical need to accelerate economic reforms, safeguard the Constitution, consolidate the federal democratic republic system, and restore hope among the populace.

The NC further assessed that Prime Minister Dahal's actions have exacerbated uncertainty and instability within the country.

In response to these developments, the NC has resolved to assume the role of an effective opposition within the parliament. The party has also called upon its members, supporters, and well-wishers both domestically and internationally to remain unified and committed to the party's organization in the face of changing circumstances, while also fulfilling their responsibilities towards the nation and its citizens.
