Change Action Nepal organizes panel discussion and interaction program on 17th National Day Against Human Trafficking

KATHMANDU, Sep 6: On the occasion of the 17th National Day Against Human Trafficking, which is celebrated on the 20th of the Nepali month of Bhadra, Change Action Nepal (CAN) organized a panel discussion and interaction program on “Rights of Trafficking Victims and Their Access to Compensation” on Wednesday, today, at Hotel AlphaBeta in Baneshwor.

In the panel discussion facilitated by Govinda Khadka from Nepal F.M., the Chairperson of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Parliament Committee, Bimala Subedi, Attorney from Office of the Attorney General, Bina Dahal, Deputy Superintendent of Police from the Human Trafficking Bureau, Ranjan Awa, and women's human rights activist, Chari Maya Tamang, were present.

Presenting on the theme “Rights of Trafficking Victims and Their Access to Compensation”, Advocate Sashi Basnet highlighted the legal provisions and implementation challenges on the rights of the victims and their access to compensation. The panelists were asked questions based on the presentation and their working area to promote a much-needed dialogue on the victim's right to access compensation. The panel discussion covered areas including the present scenario of human trafficking, the new forms and means of human trafficking, registration of human trafficking cases, legal procedures and measures to ensure compensation for survivors.

Sharing their concerns, the participants of the program asked questions to the panelists. Addressing the concerns of the participants, the parliamentarians expressed their commitment to voice the issue in the parliament, while the representatives from the Human Trafficking Bureau and Office of Attorney General expressed their interest in coordinating with the relevant law enforcement agencies to control the spread of human trafficking and to take initiatives for survivors to get access to rights and compensation.

To celebrate the 17th National Day Against Human Trafficking with the slogan “Social Justice and Economic Empowerment: For Eradication of Human Trafficking”, CAN has made an appeal to all Civil Society Organizations, the Government of Nepal, Law Enforcement Agencies, Human Rights Organizations, and other stakeholders to unite against human trafficking. CAN has requested everyone to participate in the anti-trafficking campaign and help eradicate human trafficking.
