Indian Cabinet passes proposal to buy 10 thousand MW of electricity from Nepal in 10 years

KATHMANDU, Sep 5: The Indian Cabinet has passed the proposal to buy 10 thousand Megawatts of electricity from Nepal in the next 10 years and it is in the process of implementation. The Nepali Ambassador for India, Dr. Shankar Sharma gave the information.

In a joint press conference organized during Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda's visit to India, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to buy 10,000 Megawatts of electricity from Nepal in the next 10 years.

An agreement was also made for the development of Lower Arun and Phukot Karnali projects during PM Dahal’s India visit. Lower Arun Project Development Agreement (PDA) of 669 MW capacity has been signed while a Bilateral Agreement (MOU) has been signed regarding Phukot Karnali with 480 MW capacity.

Bangladesh to buy 40 MW of electricity from Nepal
On the other hand, Bangladesh is also going to buy 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal. In the secretary-level meeting held between the two countries, it was agreed that Bangladesh would purchase 40 megawatts of electricity produced in Nepal.

Nepal and Bangladesh have also agreed to convene a tripartite meeting to convince India as Nepal's electricity has to be transported to Bangladesh through the Indian transmission line. Power trading will be commenced from the next season by exporting electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh via India.

There was also a discussion on the construction of a dedicated transmission line for electricity trade between the two countries. An agreement to take 40 megawatts of electricity for testing was already made between Nepal and Bangladesh in September last year.
