SSP Acharya reaches Hong Kong to collect information on gold smuggling
KATHMANDU, Aug 30: The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Dinesh Acharya, has reached Hong Kong to investigate the recent case of smuggling of 60 kg gold which was seized from the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA). SSP Acharya went to Hong Kong in cooperation with the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).
The Department of Revenue Investigation seized the 60 kg 716 grams of gold on July 19. The gold was smuggled from Hong Kong by ‘Ready Trade Pvt. Ltd’ by hiding inside the brake pads of motorcycles and scooters. On August 6, CIB was handed over the responsibility of the investigation by the Department.
The Police Headquarters has formed an investigation committee under the leadership of the Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Kiran Bajracharya, who is also the Director of CIB.
The CIB had formed a team under the command of the Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjay Singh Thapa and started the investigation on August 7. The Police had already sent a letter to the INTERPOL requesting help for the investigation.
As the main role of Chinese citizens has been seen in the gold case, Acharya went to Hong Kong in coordination with INTERPOL Hong Kong to get information about whether or not Chinese people involved in smuggling have been involved in crimes in Hong Kong before.
Based on the letter sent by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Interpol's National Control Bureau (NCB) Kathmandu has recommended issuing a purple notice to the Interpol Headquarters.
After bringing the gold to Nepal, it was found that the gangs were sending the gold to India after smelting the gold. The Police Headquarters has also sent a letter to Interpol India seeking help in the investigation.
