Farmers throw tomatoes after not getting market value (with pictures)

KATHMANDU, June 18: Farmers have thrown tomatoes in masses at Kalimati streets after their production did not get the market value in accordance with their costs.

The government added Value Added Tax on onions and potatoes in an attempt to increase domestic production in Nepal. Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat stated that this would increase domestic production in Nepal. However, the tomato farmers are not getting the market value in accordance with their cost during the season of production.

The wholesale price of tomatoes in Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Committee is only 8 rupees at present. This means that farmers are only getting a price of Rs. 1 to Rs. 2 per kg. Thus the farmers are throwing tomatoes in the Kalimati streets in protest.
