Three Nepali Nationals Arrested at Tribhuvan Airport for Attempting to Smuggle Foreign Currency

Three Nepali citizens have been arrested by the Tribhuvan International Airport Security Office on charges of illegally carrying foreign currency.

According to a press release issued by the office, the US dollars were recovered from the passengers who were scheduled to depart for Guangzhou, China, at 11:45 AM on Chaitra 5.

The security office stated that the individuals were immediately taken into custody after US dollars they were attempting to smuggle were discovered during body searches and baggage scanning. The arrested individuals have been sent to the Department of Revenue Investigation, Hariharbhawan Pulchowk, Lalitpur, for necessary investigation and legal action.

The arrested individuals are identified as 45-year-old Anita Lama, a resident of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-1; 38-year-old Sangita Lama, a resident of Sindhupalchok Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-6; and 47-year-old Binod Lama, a resident of Sindhupalchok Lisankhupakhar Rural Municipality-7.

The security office reported that a total of US$28,900 was recovered from them, consisting of US$10,000, US$10,000, and US$8,900, respectively. The office added that further investigation into this incident is ongoing and that controls on foreign currency trafficking have been tightened.
