Jailed Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalized Amid Pneumonia Concerns

Brasilia. Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently imprisoned on charges of plotting a coup to overturn the elected government, was hospitalized on Friday, according to family sources.

"Dad is going to the hospital again. According to the initial report, he has been hospitalized due to persistent vomiting caused by pneumonia," Senator and presidential aspirant Flavio Bolsonaro wrote on X.

Former President Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for inciting his supporters to attempt a failed 'coup' after being defeated in the 2022 election. He has frequently suffered from health problems since being stabbed in the abdomen during an election campaign in 2018.

Brazil's next presidential election is scheduled for October, and despite being incarcerated, Bolsonaro remains a major figure on the country's political stage.

Former President Bolsonaro announced his eldest son, Flavio Bolsonaro, as the right-wing candidate to challenge the current leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro, an ally of former US President Donald Trump, had his lawyers petition the Supreme Court to allow Darren Beatty, the new advisor to the US State Department for Brazil, to meet Bolsonaro in prison on March 18.

Previously, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had ordered arrangements for the meeting, but he revoked his permission on Thursday after the Brazilian government requested the meeting not take place.
