Protestors call for Home Minister's resignation following torture of Dalit youth (photos)
Kathmandu, February 5 — Protests were held in Kathmandu on Wednesday against alleged atrocities committed on a Dalit youth under the direction of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
The protest, organized by the 'Dalits for Dalits' campaign, took place at Maitighar Mandala, where demonstrators voiced their strong opposition.
The incident came to light on Tuesday when news emerged of a Dalit youth being tortured for engaging in an inter-caste marriage.
Satyendra Kumar Ram, a resident of Sarlahi, has reportedly faced repeated torture at the hands of the police following his inter-caste marriage.
Ram had married Neha Rauniyar, also from Sarlahi, in an inter-caste union, which has allegedly sparked controversy and led to the alleged abuse.
The youth had been reportedly subjected to abuse due to his relationship, which the authorities were said to have intervened in.
The victim was later detained by the police in Mumbai.
In addition to the protests, Dalit students held a press conference at Maitighar on the same day, accusing the Home Minister of involvement in the abuse, which allegedly took place in an effort to forcefully annul the inter-caste marriage.
They claimed the Minister’s direct orders led to the actions taken against the youth.
However, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has denied any involvement in the case, claiming that he had no part in the events surrounding the alleged abuse.
