TU forms committee to appoint part-time professors on contract

Kathmandu, November 10 — Tribhuvan University has initiated the process of appointing part-time professors on contract. A three-member field study team has been formed under the leadership of Professor Yogendra Prasad Gurung to carry out the necessary assessments. Based on the team's report, Tribhuvan University will create a procedure for the appointment of teaching assistants, and the process for the recruitment of teacher assistants will move forward.

The decision to begin the contract appointment process for part-time professors across all 62 constituent campuses was made during a meeting of the University Executive Council on August 7. Following that, the office of the university's academic dean formed a task force to proceed with the matter.

Letters were sent to various campuses, including Doti Multiple Campus, Darchula Campus, Surkhet Campus, Tehrathum Campus, Bhojpur Campus, Bishwa Bhasha Campus in Kathmandu, and Jumla Campus, to inform them of the decision.

Currently, around 2,200 part-time professors are teaching at the university. These instructors had previously protested, demanding that they receive monthly salaries similar to those of contract-based teachers. Following these protests, an agreement was reached on July 30 between the Part-time Professors Association's central struggle committee and the negotiation and advisory committee.

Based on this agreement, the University Executive Council decided to move forward with the process for the appointment of teacher assistants. Tribhuvan University had also formed a negotiation and advisory committee under the leadership of Professor Ramkrishna Tiwari. The process moved forward after an agreement was reached based on the committee’s report.

However, part-time professors had warned that they would block the Assistant Professor exam scheduled for November 15 if the process was not advanced. In response to their warning, Tribhuvan University has now accelerated the process of creating the necessary procedure for the appointments.
