All 56 gates of Koshi barrage opened amid rising water levels

Biratnagar, September 28 — As the water flow in the Saptakoshi River increases, the risk is also rising. According to measurements taken this afternoon, the water flow in the Saptakoshi has been recorded at 507,695 cubic feet per second. With the high water flow, all 56 gates of the Koshi barrage have been opened.

As the water level and flow rise, danger signals have been activated with red lights on both sides of the barrage. This morning's measurement at 8:30 AM recorded a flow of 418,285 cubic feet per second, while a measurement at 7 AM showed 381,810 cubic feet per second. The district administration office in Sunsari has indicated that the water flow is increasing rapidly.

With the rising water flow, residents in the eastern and western coastal areas are anxious. The Indian authorities have warned their citizens to remain vigilant, estimating that the flow may reach 700,000 cubic feet per second.

The Bihar government has issued a statement predicting that by noon on Saturday, the flow at the Koshi barrage in Birpur will be 681,000 cubic feet per second. If the water level reaches the predicted level, it could result in significant damage.

Bihar has also instructed its district administrations to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Citizens living near the embankments have been advised to be cautious and take appropriate measures.

Additionally, regular patrols in flood-affected areas have been mandated. The risk of erosion along Nepal's western embankments has increased following the opening of all 56 gates.
