Madan Bhandari's team

Kathmandu: The fifth national convention of CPN-UML was held in Kathmandu from January 27th to 3rd February, 1993. The closed session held at Pragya Bhawan Kamaladi approved the People's Multi-Party Democracy (JBJ) as proposed by the then General Secretary Madan Bhandari.

The convention elected Bhandari as the general secretary. However, leaders such as Chandraprakash Mainali, Jhalanath Khanal and others strongly protested against the proposal.

After the United People's Movement of 1990, UML won 69 seats and became the main opposition party in the general elections of 1992. In that election, Bhandari was elected from Kathmandu Constituency No. 1 and 5. He came into the limelight after defeating the incumbent Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai.

UML has been accepting Bhandari's statement till now. The fifth convention elected Manamohan Adhikari as the president.

At that time, a 44-member central committee was formed. In which there were 12 standing committee members, 24 central committee members and 7 alternate central committee members.

After General Secretary Bhandari passed away in a mysterious jeep accident at Dasdhunga in Chitwan on16th May, 1993 , the Central Committee meeting elected Madhav Kumar Nepal as Acting General Secretary.

General Secretary Bhandari who was in the Central Committee at that time along with Chairman Adhikari, Standing Committee members Jivaraj Ashrit, Bharat Mohan Adhikari and Sahana Pradhan have passed away. Central committee members Premsingh Dhami, Salim Miya Ansari also passed away. Some of the rest have started new parties and some are inactive in politics. Some have joined other parties. Siddhilal Singh is living without any political affiliations.
