Melamchi Drinking Water Project resumes supply, Kathmandu to receive water gradually from today

KATHMANDU: Following the recent disruptions caused by landslides and flash floods, the Melamchi Drinking Water Project is set to recommence the distribution of drinking water in Kathmandu starting today.

The Melamchi River faced severe challenges due to the landslides and flash floods, resulting in the temporary closure of the project.

However, after successful reconstruction efforts, the project is now ready to resume supplying water to the capital, as confirmed by Ahamed Ansari, the executive director of the Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee.

The Sundarijal reservoir and water treatment plant are currently receiving an impressive daily intake of 17 crore liters of water.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is scheduled to officially re-inaugurate the re-distribution of water from Singha Durbar on Monday.

Ahamed Ansari outlined the phased approach for water distribution, stating, "The distribution will gradually begin from Min Bhawan and Anamnagar, followed by Khumaltar, Balajua, and Bode one by one." He expressed confidence that within one or two days, water would be efficiently distributed across the entire capital.

This marks a significant milestone, as it has been three years since the initiation of Melamchi drinking water distribution in the capital. The resumption of operations brings relief to residents who have faced water scarcity during the project's closure due to natural calamities.
