Wild Boar declared as animal harmful to agriculture

KATHMANDU, Nov 24: The government has declared the Wild Boar as an animal harmful to agriculture by publishing a notice in the Nepal Gazette on Thursday.

According to the published notice, the wild boars that damage the crops by coming into the farmers’ fields can be captured and killed without any permission. It has been stated that the wild boars can be captured and killed without permission until a year from the date of the notice published in the Nepal Gazette and that only the boars aside from the breed of small boars that come to the private fields of farmers will be allowed to be captured or killed.

The captured boars must be handed over to the respective National Park Office, Wildlife Reserve Office, Hunting Reserve Office, Protection Region Office, Division Forest Office or any such offices, and its notice must also be provided to the respective local level Ward Office, as per the notice published.

If the boar dies during the course, it will have to be buried in the presence of at least five locals including a representative of the respective Ward or an amount will be fixed according to the boar’s weight, which will be presented for revenue, and then it can be used or consumed inside the respective ward. However, the dead boars are not allowed to be used for business purposes.

The local level will need to provide the details of the boars killed during the year to the Forest Ministry. Boars inside the forests, reserved areas or conserved areas, however, are not allowed to be captured or killed.
National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act has forbidden people to kill wild boars in normal conditions. If people are found breaking those rules, penalties of a 6-month to a 1-year-prison-sentence, or a Rs 20 thousand to a Rs 50 thousand fine, or both, are under implementation.
