India defeats Bangladesh in opening match of U-19 SAFF Championship

KATHMANDU, Sep 21: India made a winning start against Bangladesh in the U-19 SAFF Championship football tournament on Thursday.

India defeated Bangladesh by a wide margin of 3-0 in the opening match of the Championship tournament played at Dashrath Stadium in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.

The first half was dominated by India after Gwgwmsar Govarv scored a goal in the first minute of the game. Naoba Meitei added another one for the country in the stoppage time of the first half.

The third goal for the team was scored by Arjun Singh Oinam in the 90th minute of the game. India managed to record a clean sheet in their first game of the tournament.

There are 6 teams participating in the SAFF tournament this year. India and Bangladesh are both in the Group 'B' alongside Bhutan.

Host Nepal, Maldives and Pakistan are in the Group 'A' in the tournament. Nepal will play its first match against Pakistan on Thursday evening. Two teams from each group will enter the semi-finals of the competition.
