Colombia and Philippines hang on in tough battle against World Cup threats

SYDNEY, July 25: Philippines has caused a major upset in the Women's World Cup after beating the co-host New Zealand by the score of 0-1.

The debutants hung on to victory after Sarina Bolden scored the first and only goal of the game.

On the other side, Colombia started off their World Cup campaign by beating their tough opposition South Korea by 2-0.

The first goal came from a penalty shot after the Korean goalkeeper Yoon Young-geul committed a blunder. Catalina Usme was invited to shoot the penalty for Colombia. The second goal was scored 9 minutes later by the 18-year-old Linda Caicedo. The winning side held on to victory after going scoreless in the second half.

For South Korea, history was made as Casey Phair became the youngest-ever player at a Women's World Cup. The forward, aged just 16 years and 26 days, was introduced as a 77th-minute substitute.
