India supports Pakistan's proposal at UN, 7 countries including Nepal neutral

KATHMANDU, July 13: The proposal submitted by Pakistan to the United Nations has been supported by 28 countries including India.

Pakistan submitted a proposal to the United Nations "Human Rights Council" on Wednesday demanding strict action against incidents like the burning of the Quran.

In the 47-member council, 12 countries including the United States voted against the proposal, while 7 countries including Nepal decided to remain neutral.

On the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, a young man in Sweden burned the Quran outside a mosque in Stockholm.

According to the American news channel "CNN", the local administration gave permission to the young man for a one-day demonstration under the right to freedom of expression.

In addition to Islamic countries, Pope Francis and the Swedish government also condemned the incident.

When the proposal was discussed in the 'Human Rights Council', the countries in favor of the proposal argued that such activities should not be encouraged in the name of freedom of expression, saying that events like the burning of the Quran would increase hatred and outrage.

But some Western countries, including the US, condemned this type of incident but argued that freedom of expression means sometimes having to tolerate intolerable ideas.
