Be careful in summer! "Loo" can kill

KATHMANDU, June 5: Due to extreme heat, many schools in the Terai region have been closed this week, as the temperature has risen from 40 to 42 degree Celsius in the various cities of Terai. Every year "Loo" poses a big threat due to hot air, especially in the Terai region. Getting "Loo" is also known as summer season disease.

What happens when we get "Loo"?
Heat stroke also known as "Loo" is caused if the temperature is more than 38 degrees Celsius and many physical problems start to appear, said Physician Dr. Roshan Kumar Jha. It affects children and the elderly more.

According to Dr. Jha, due to extreme heat, the blood vessels dilate and blood circulation increases, causing the liquid in the body to come out and many health problems start appearing. It causes pain from the groin to the flesh of the hands, heaviness in the head, burning eyes, etc. If this happens, it is necessary to take immediate precautions. In this case, we should drink water and sit in the shade or someplace cool.

Due to the serious effects of heat stroke, one can even faint. If people faint like this, water and elements like salt and sodium decrease in the kidneys, liver, and brain, which can distort the heartbeat. In these times, people can get fever as the body tries to maintain the temperature and if they do not get any emergency care or treatment, it might even cause death.

The hot air causes the body temperature to rise, which is known as the time before the "Loo". Constantly working in the sun and not drinking water can lead to heat stroke.

Why do hard workers get heat stroke?
According to Dr. Jha, among the two types of heatstrokes, one is exertional heat stroke, which adults who do more physical work such as armies, police, sportsmen and those who do more exercise get.

Sweat comes continuously when doing physical work and there is a chance of being dehydrated due to the loss of salt and water in the body. Dr. Jha said that these effects are seen when potassium and sodium get decreased in the body due to heat stroke. "We must take measures to decrease the body temperature as soon as possible", he said.
