Province abolition proposal introduced in UML meeting

KATHMANDU, May 12: In the ongoing central committee meeting of the CPN-UML, the proposal to abolish the provincial structure under federalism has been formally accepted. In the ongoing central committee meeting, UML leaders Mahesh Basnet, Gokul Baskota, Devi Gyawali and others proposed that the party should reconsider federalism and hold a discussion about it.

In the group discussion on reports submitted from all seven provinces under Mission Grassroots Campaign, Basnet, Baskota and Gyawali, representing the Bagmati Province group, suggested that federalism should be reconsidered and a directly elected head of government should be arranged.

Leader Basnet suggested that federalism be reviewed, a directly elected head of government be made and a two-party system or a 5 percent threshold be organized for political stability. Similarly, another leader Baskota also suggested that the provincial and district coordination committee should be abolished saying federalism has been a financial burden and people are not liking it.

According to UML sources, Baskota said that the province structure was not justified and the people did not like it, so it should be discussed by the party.

Similarly, he has also suggested that a 33 percent quota should be allocated directly to women while embracing inclusiveness.

Leaders Baskota and Basnet had demanded the abolition of federalism before this as well.
