Nepal Presidential Election: Vote weight in the National Assembly

KATHMANDU, Feb 26: Nepal’s presidential election is scheduled for March 9.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari's second term is coming to an end, and Nepal will soon have a new head of state. As per the country's constitution, an individual who has served two terms as president cannot run for office again.

The Nepal presidential election differs from other elections in the country because the public is not allowed to vote. Instead, an electoral college made up of all members of the federal parliament's House of Representatives and National Assembly, as well as members of the seven provincial parliaments, will choose the president. The electoral college will consist of 884 members, including 275 House of Representatives members, 59 National Assembly members, and 550 members from the provincial assemblies, as outlined in article 62 of the constitution.

Ram Chandra Poudel of Nepali Congress and Subhash Nembang of CPN-UML are vying for the post.
