The reason Russia removed its top commander for Ukraine war

MOSCOW, Jan. 12: Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the top commander of Russia in Ukraine, Sergei Surovikhin. He was appointed to Ukraine only three months ago. Now Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov will lead this "special military operation".
General Gerasimov has been appointed to replace Sergei Surovikhin. As supreme commander, Surovykin was the head of the combined forces of Russia and was responsible for the recent attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
The change came after Russia claimed it was advancing in eastern Ukraine. Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24 last year. General Gerasimov has been the Chief of Staff since 2012 as the longest-serving Chief of General Staff since the Soviet era.
General Surovikin will now work as his deputy. He is known for his brutal policies in previous wars, including Russia's campaign in Syria and the heavy bombing of the city of Aleppo.
After that, in October, he was entrusted with the leadership of this campaign. Then Russia tried to destroy Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Surovikin was also present during the withdrawal of the Russian army from Kherson.
Russia's Ministry of Defense has claimed that replacing Surovikin was to "establish closer contact between the various branches of the military and improve the quality and effectiveness of management." But it is also said that Surovikin had gained a lot of power.
Rob Lee, an expert on military affairs, wrote on Twitter, "As a commander of three armies, Surovikin became too powerful and ignored the defense minister and Gerasimo while talking to President Putin."
