54 percent of those dying of COVID-19 in Nepal are senior citizens above 60

KATHMANDU, July 25: COVID-18 fatality tally of Nepal is inching closer to 10,000. Since the first death case was reported on May 16, 2020, Nepal has witnessed at least 9,695 fatalities.

The second wave of the disease triggered by a deadly new variant of the virus took its toll in the country leaving hundreds of people dead on a daily basis.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), senior citizens above 60 years of age are those who have been adversely affected by the fatal disease. The data released by the ministry on Saturday stated that 53.61 percent of the total deaths have been reported from this age group. As many as 5,198 elderly citizens succumbed to the deadly disease as of Saturday afternoon.

The data shows that the fatality rate is directly proportional to age, meaning younger people have less death rate. According to the ministry, 41 children below 9 years of age died of coronavirus. While 50 teenagers below 19 succumbed  to the disease, 1,900 adult citizens (50-59 years) lost their battle against the virus.
