Deadline to join CPN (US) and DSP expiring today

KATHMANDU: The deadline issued by the Election Commission (EC) for the people’s representatives of the CPN-UML and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) to join the newly formed CPN (Unified SOcialist) and Democratic Socialist Party (DSP) is due to expire at 5PM on Monday.

Following the introduction by the party-split ordinance by the Sher Bahadur Deuba alliance government on August 17 and issuance of the same by President Bidya Devi Bhandari the next day, splinter factions of the UML and JSP registered two new parties --- CPN (US) by UML’s splinter faction and DSP, a splitting faction of JSP.

As per the provisions of the ordinance, any group with the support of at least 20 percent of Central Committee or Parliamentary Party members can register a new party.

The CPN (US) chaired by Madhav Kumar Nepal and DSP presided by Mahantha Thakur were registered with the poll body on August 25.
