Minister urges teachers unable to deliver effectively to retire

Bhaktapur–Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokhrel has called on those teachers unable to perform effectively to leave the job and vacate space for new generations.

In his address to a programme organised by the Chagunarayan municipality today to unveil the local curriculum, he was of the view that those teachers unable to perform well should not continue occupying the posts.

"Teaching profession is not about just doing the job, it is the discipline for producing competent future generations. Effective and quality public education is the need of the hour," he said, urging teachers to deliver effectively inside the classroom.

"If you are sure that you could not deliver efficiently, you are requested to vacate the space for new generation." The minister insisted that effective teaching learning activities should be ensured and teachers should take up the responsibility for improvements of weak students.

The minister saw the problem in existing system of evaluating student's level of understanding as he said students were given throughout a lecture inside the classroom, told to follow rote learning and the competency test was conducted through a three-hour examination.

The Education Minister urged local levels to pick up qualified candidates (those passing the Teachers' Service Commission) while hiring teachers.

On the occasion, municipality mayor Som Prasad Mishra said a 100-mark curriculum entitled 'Our Chagunaryan' had been developed and implemented for class 6,7 and 8 at once from this academic session.

The course is to be revised and implemented for other classes as well from the next year.
