I will face special convention of the party: NC president Deuba

Biratnagar– Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba has said he would face the special convention of the party if the party's district presidents were to call one.

Talking to journalists at Biratnagar airport on Thursday, he said he would confront the special convention called by what he called a small number of 20 to 25 district presidents of the party.

The party president said that had there been the late Girija Prasad Koirala, he would have expelled the district presidents in such situation but he would not take any action against them. According to him, the party's disciplinary committee would look into the matter.

On the recent appointment of justices in the Supreme Court and the High Court, the NC president said he would not comment on this matter as the Judicial Council has appointed only the qualified people as justices in the Supreme Court and the High Court. He however stated that the Judicial Council should stay aloof from politics while making appointments of judges and there was no objection anywhere regarding these appointments.

The leader of the main opposition party in parliament, Deuba, argued that the Constitutional Council should also take his approval as the leader of the opposition party while making appointments. It cannot appoint unilaterally without the opposition party leader's consent, he insisted.

As he said, he had written a letter to the Constitutional Council that he would not be able to attend its meeting and urged to defer decision on appointments. I object to the appointments made unilaterally, he added.

The NC president alleged the government of carrying out works unilaterally out of the egocentric thinking of two-thirds majority, saying the NC as an opposition party would protest this move in parliament and from the streets.

"The NC is united in the present circumstances," he said and expressed the confidence that it would be stronger from the upcoming general convention.
