GMT president Gurung instructs to halt construction of Gorkha Memorial

Kathmandu–President of the Gorkha Memorial Trust Padam Bahadur Gurung has given direction to halt the construction works of the Gorkha Memorial being built at Salmedanda at Phedikhola in Syangja district.

Gurung is the founding president of the Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen’s Organisation (GAESO).
Issuing a press statement here today, President Gurung said that the construction works did not meet the construction criteria and many changes were made in the original map for the Memorial during the process.

Raising a question over the attitude and behavior of some people in the construction site, Gurung argued that such attitude and behavior would do no good to anyone.

Gurung has accused GAESO former General-Secretary Chandra Bahadur Gurung and some other people were involved in the misappropriation of the fund and misleading the construction process.

He shared that the construction of the Memorial was going to be built in commemoration of the gallantry and the sacrifices of lives by the brave Gurkha soldiers in the foreign land. The Memorial would also record the names of those Gurkha soldiers disappearing.

The former Gurkha solider who fought for the welfare of the British Gurkha soldiers in the UK for 27 years and took the lead for building the Memorial said that he had managed a loan from the former Gurkhas for the same.

"Chandra Bahadur Gurung has arbitrarily made changes in the original map sketched for the Memorial. He wantonly built a water tank against the plan. He is also learned to have taken money from the Department of Tourism without the knowledge of the senior engineer of the Memorial Shankarnath Rimal," President Gurung asserted, demanding a probe into the irregularities of the fund collected from the Department of Tourism and to retrieve the money from the culprit.
